This is Duo's complete story but I can't remember the dates.
As far back as Duo could remember, he was a homeless war refugee. He didn't even know his own name, nor had he claimed one for himself. Sometime he had found a group of children living on the streets and took refuge with them. The leader was an older boy named Uno, (Not making this up) and the two boys became good friends.
During that time, a deadly plague had came upon the L2 Colony. Although they had a cure for the disease, they only gave it to those that could afford it. Needless to say that the group of kids became infected, including Duo and Uno. However, with Uno being the oldest, he could handle the effects better than the others. So he snuck into the clinic and stole as much of the antidote as he could. He came back and gave as much of the antidote to the kids that his supply allowed. But when it was finally down to him and Duo, there was only enough for one more dose, and since Duo was too sick to wait for another raid... Uno gave the antidote to Duo, signing his own death sentence." Out of respect and gratefulness for Uno's Sacrifice, Duo chose his name, so that he'd never forget his friend.
Several years later, he and the remainder of the kids where still street urchins, stealing for food and such. After a raid, they were caught, but instead of going to jail. A preacher took mercy on them and took them into the Maxwell church.
Duo had a hard time trying to adjust and deal with the torment of the other kids, but one of the sisters encouraged him and became an important part of his life. However, he was a stubborn boy and they could never get him to believe in god but in Shinigami. As he once said, "I have never seen god, but I've seen lots and lots of death."
Despite this, the next two years grew happy for him and the church till some Military Refugees forced their way into the church taking over. They had even been abusive to the sisters of the church.
Duo came to hate them. He was happy before they came, so he had an idea. If he could get them a mobile suit, maybe they'd go away and leave everone alone. So one day he snuck out, and raided a mobile suit facility, stealing one. But... by the time he got back. The church was in ruins. Whether it was because of Duo's actions, or the fact that they harbored the enemy refugees, no one knew, but the church had been bombed. Most of the people were already dead, but he got back in time to watch the sister, that cared for him and encourage him to see that she was still alive. She died shortly after, but not before she asked god to watch over Duo. And so, Duo took on the name Maxwell, so that he wouldn't forget the people he came to love there.
Over time, Duo grew and eventually snuck into the gundam facility located on the L2 Colony's moon. He did get caught, but the doctor was quite impressed that Duo had somehow managed to get passed many of the locations elaborate security system...
And so instead of jailing him, he offered the boy a chance to become a Gundam pilot.
