A young crimson haired girl darts through the forest. Bobbing and weaving through trees and shrubs she tried to escape the tall burley black haired man quickening his speed behind her. Struggling to breathe, she looks over her shoulder quickly, only to notice her pursuer was gaining on her.
---
Her pursuer had spotted her in the market. A malicious grin appeared on his face before he began to follow her as she left the market and headed towards the forest with the few groceries her family could afford.
The man didn’t even bother to hide and once they were in the forest he smirked and called out to the girl, “Little one! You forgot something!”
The girl naively listened to the unfamiliar voice and turned around looking at the man. “What did I forget?” she asked, looking into her small basket.
The man walked up to her, smiling though his smile had a devilish look to it. He suddenly grabbed her wrist and pulled her close, the stench of alcohol on his breath as he spoke, “The most important lesson your parents ever taught you… Don’t talk to strangers.”
The young girl struggled, in an attempt to get free from his clutches she began to kick her legs feverishly. Her close proximity to the man did not allow for an easy escape. The young girl began to get frantic, screaming and yelling she was doing anything she could in her attempt to get free. Remembering an incident with her older brother she tried a new approach. Her mouth opened, bearing her teeth and she bit into the mans’ hand, as hard as she could.
“God damn little cunt!” the man howled in pain, tossing the girl to the ground before bringing his hand to his mouth, “stupid little street urchin. You’re going to regret that. Get over here,” he said before walking towards her.
Taking the only opportunity she had, she scrambled to her feet and ran. She did not stop to pick up the basket she had dropped.
The man didn’t waste any time in running after the child. He was furious as well as slightly aroused by the thrill of the chase.
---
Meanwhile, a young boy in a brown cloak sat by a pond in the middle of the forest. His feet dangled in the water as he watched the clouds through the treetops, quietly humming to himself.
He stopped after a while, however, as he heard screaming. He turned curiously to see what it was, soon standing and looking out into the trees, “what was that?”
The bushes in front of the boy begin to rustle, and suddenly a figure springs out knocking into him. The boy and the figure fell into the pond with a small splash. The two soaked figures emerged from the water. The young girl coughed, her long hair now in her face and her hair ruined. She struggled to catch her breath, the run taking its toll on her lungs.
The blonde boy sputtered slightly, shocked and soaked, “w… what was that for?”
Before the young boy could finish his sentence the girl was pushing his head underwater again. She looked up from the water, seeing the man who had been pursuing her searching the immediate area for her.
After giving the area a quick once over he turned to check the area behind him. He shrugged and left the area, giving up his pursuit of the young girl.
The girl waited for a few more seconds before breaking the surface of the water. Once again struggling to catch her breath she began to talk to herself. “What am I going to do? They gave me the only money they had for food…and now it’s gone.” Tears began streaming down the girls face.
She heard coughing behind her, the boy trying to catch his breath still. He sighed after a while, his throat cleared, before looking to the young girl. He bit his lip, unsure of what to do as he heard her begin to cry, “P… please don’t cry.”
“I.. I can’t help it… they are going to be so upset with me.. and we won’t have any food… that was the last of the money…” she whimpered as she began to wipe her eyes.
“Oh… uhh…” the boy bit his lip before reaching under his cloak and grabbing a small pouch from his belt, “Well, if it’s just money for food that you need… You can have this money,” he said, taking her hand and putting the pouch into it.
The girl looked blankly at the boy, her eyes and face red from her blubbering. Where she came from children her age did not have money. She was confused but looked at the pouch in her hand. Slowly she began to pull open the pouch and her eyes widened as she saw what was inside. A large amount of coins. More then the young girl had ever seen, let alone held, at one time. “B…But where did you get these?” she asked, looking at the boy, her eyes beginning to clear up.
The boy shrugged slightly, “does it really matter? It’s all yours…” he smiled warmly. He seemed quite happy really, though many people wouldn’t be after handing over such a large sum of gold to someone else, let alone a stranger.
“B... but your family needs to eat too…” she said, holding out the pouch to him.
The blue-eyed youth chuckled, “Don’t worry about us. There’s plenty more where that came from. We don’t need it. You need it much more then I do. What am I going to do with it? Drop it in the wishing well and hope for a friend?”
The girl looked at the boy curiously for a couple seconds, “thank you.” The girls’ cheeks turned a light shade of pink, but tears were no longer in sight. “My name is Kira,” she said.
“Uhhmmm… I don’t really… like my name. So… you can call me whatever you like,” he said, looking a bit uncomfortable at first before perking up a bit and smiling to the girl.
Kira looked at the boy, her head tilted to the side, as if she were a confused dog. “Okay,” she agreed suddenly, smiling warmly back at the boy. “Now what can I call you than?” she mumbled to herself. “I know!” She bursted suddenly, “I will call you Bubbles! Is that okay?”
The boy blinked, looking confused for a moment as he murmured, “w… what?” he shook his head afterwards, however, and nodded, “uhh, I guess… whatever… I did say call me what you like.”
“Well… I did almost drown you… a couple times,” she admitted, her index finger scratching her chin. “I’m sorry about that… I didn’t really mean to… Well, I guess I did mean to… but, well….” The girl trailed off, talking to herself.
The boy laughed slightly, “That’s alright. If I’d had an ugly guy like him chasing me around I’d have done the same thing,” he said, “What was he after you for anyway?”
Kira shrugged, not really knowing how to answer the question ‘bubbles’ had asked. “I don’t know… I don’t even know that man.”
“Well, all I know it probably wasn’t something nice. He smelt bad too. I could smell him from under the water even. But ya, I heard that sometimes men kidnap kids, especially little girls, for different reasons. Like to make them work for them so they don’t have to,” the blond haired boy said.
“But… I can’t work,” the young girl insisted, “They wanted me to make it home with the food before dinner.” Her eyes went wide suddenly, as she realized the time. “Oh my gosh! I have to go back to the market for the food and make it back before dinner! The sun is starting to go down, the market will be closing soon!” The girl hollered. “I’m sorry, I have to go…” she apologized, her hair somewhat dry again.
“I really want to thank you for the money, but I don’t have anything to give you in return…” she said. Kira thought to herself for a moment and then stepped forward with one foot. Leaning her head down she kissed his cheek lightly. Stepping back again she looked at the boy and smiled.
The boy’s face darkened some as he stared at her for a moment before shaking his head and saying calmly, “How about you just come here and meet me tomorrow ok? This was nice. It’s nice… to be around someone my own age.”
The girl nodded, “okay,” she said. With that Kira smiled and turned around, running back to the market.
~~~ The Next Day ~~~
The next day Kira arrived at the pond, but her new friend was nowhere in sight. She was disappointed, but quickly headed back for home after realizing he was not coming.
What she didn’t know was that her new friend was busy with family business. His mother had just given birth to a beautiful baby girl, Seraphina Maria Illisthia. She was princess to the kingdom… and he was the prince. Prince Tanrien Alden Illisthia.
Once he heard the good news he completely forgot about Kira. He was even allowed to hold the little princess for a few minutes before he was ushered out of the nursery. The moment he got into the hall he realized he’d forgotten about Kira.
The young prince rushed towards his ‘escape’ route but was quickly stopped by his ‘nanny’. She sighed and shook her head, “I know that look young man. You’re not leaving the castle grounds. You shouldn’t be leaving in the first place. It’s dangerous out there for someone of your lineage and as soon as I figure out how you’re getting out I’ll remedy the problem.”
The boy looked at her with a disappointed look, “Please don’t. I just wanted to make friends. I’m never allowed to spend time with children my age, except maybe other princes’ and princess’ and they’re no fun.”
“Am I not your friend, your young majesty?” the nanny asked, kneeling down to the prince’s level.
“But you’re an adult… that’s different,” the blue eyed said, “And it is kinda your job to look after me. I see you all the time and as much as I like spending time with you I want to meet new people too.”
“Well, if that’s how you feel,” the nanny said, standing back up. “I do realize there aren’t many children your age in the palace. But, gallivanting outside the palace is dangerous for someone of your importance, regardless of the reason.” The nanny pointed out before continuing, “perhaps we could hire some children to come and keep you company. I can bring the suggestion up to your parents if you like.”
Tanrien made a bit of a face, “but then that would technically be work for them wouldn’t it? If they’re only going to play with me because they’re getting paid I don’t think that’s going to be all that fun. I want someone to like me for me… not because I’m a prince or because they’re getting paid to be my friend. You understand right?”
“I am sure we can work something out,” she said, with a positive attitude. “Until we do, now would be a great time to spend some time with your mother. I am sure she would love it if you go in and keep her company. She does need rest though, so no running around, understood?”
“Alright,” the boy said, seeming to cheer up a bit. He nodded as he turned to head back to his mothers room, “see you later tonight nana,” he said before walking to the door and slowly opening it, stepping inside.
As the door opened the figure on the large, wooden canopy bed sat herself up slightly. “Tanrien? Is that you sweetheart? Is there something wrong?” she asked, tapping the bed next to her lightly with her hand. The woman was beautiful, even in her weakened state. Her long golden hair splayed out on the bed on either side of her. She smiled elegantly as she ushered her son over to sit beside her.
The blue-eyed youth smiled as he walked over and sat next to his mother. He bit his lip slightly, wondering to himself whether showing affection toward his mother would be welcomed or not. He didn’t want to do anything to upset her after all.
His mother reached out a hand and placed it lightly on his cheek, “I over heard you practicing piano this morning, Darling. Your skills are really improving, it sounded beautiful. So beautiful in fact, that it sent me into labor,” his mother said, with a slight giggle.
Tanrien smiled slightly and giggled as well, “That wouldn’t make you go into labor,” he said, “The baby just wanted out. I imagine there isn’t all that much room in there so I don’t blame her.”
“Have you seen your new baby sister, Honey?” The queen asked. “Perhaps while I am on bed rest you can play the piano to help her fall asleep. Maybe write her her very own lullaby?” his mother suggested.
The blond prince nodded, “that sounds like fun. Of course I will,” he said smiling, “It’ll be really good too, promise,” he said beaming as he curled closer to his mother, feeling a lot better, “But for now… can I stay in here for a bit?”
“Of course you can,” she said, smiling as she moved her body over slightly to make room for her little boy. She placed her arm around his back to cradle him as he cuddled up against her body.
Tanrien smiled at this as he relaxed, his head resting next to his mother’s own as he let his eyes slip shut. It didn’t take very long for sleep to catch up with the boy, dragging him into a dreamless sleep.
~~~ The Next Day ~~~
Tanrien had spent the entire night in his mother’s chamber but in the morning it was time for his lessons. He headed off for his first lessons before having breakfast.
After breakfast, however, he was supposed to head off to his reading lessons. Instead, he snuck off, heading towards the gardens to enjoy the beautiful day and some peace and quiet. He liked his lessons sometimes but after a while it just became too dull and repetitive.
